OUTSIDE Highlights for the week of August 19th
TUESDAY August 20th, BARBARA ALIPRANTIS, a trilingual (English/Greek/ASL) Storyteller will be OUTSIDE at the Countway Courtyard telling stories on the half hour from 12-2pm. Born in Greece, her repertoire includes stories about her Greek-American immigrant childhood played out on the sidewalks of Brooklyn, NY, her adult life in the bustling multiethnic borough of Queens and anecdotes of how people circumvent communication obstacles, culled over 30 years of experience working with multilingual, linguistically diverse populations of all ages, as well as hearing and deaf, including people with special needs.
Founder of the New York STORY Exchange, Barbara launched the 2nd Tuesday of the month series at the Cornelia Street Café in 1997, making it the longest continuous evening storytelling series for adults in NYC. https://www.facebook.com/NewYorkStoryExchange. Her awards include a National Storytelling Network ORACLE Service Award, and she was honored at New York City Hall for “her distinguished body of work…for her commitment to sharing multicultural folklore and immigrants’ experiences for both hearing and non-hearing audiences around the country.” She holds a BA in the Performing Arts from SUNY Empire State College, with a concentration in “Total Communication and Performance.”
On Thursday, August 22nd, Author Susan Bernhard will discuss her book “Winter Loon,” which has been hailed ‘brutal, beautiful coming-of-age story of a man who loses everything & must return to the landscape of that loss to discover what it all means. Bernhard is a writer of incredible grace and power who employs weather and the natural world to plumb the icy depths of her characters’ souls.’
Bernhard is a Massachusetts Cultural Council fellowship recipient and a graduate of the GrubStreet Novel Incubator program. She was born and raised in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, is a graduate of the University of Maryland, and lives with her husband and two children near Boston. WINTER LOON (Little A, December 2018) is her debut novel.
